Belmond Hotel Monasterio - an Historic Stay in Cusco

Written by Lightfoot Travel

Situated in the heart of Cusco, in the Peruvian Andes, Belmond Hotel Monasterio offers the perfect base for a luxury holiday to Peru.

This striking hotel blends historical grandeur with contemporary refinement. Dating back to the 16th century, it occupies one of the city’s most coveted locations on the atmospheric Plaza Nazarenas.

Located in the heart of Peru's spiritual heartland, just steps away from Cusco’s main attractions, including the cathedral, the Plaza de Armas, and a selection of acclaimed restaurants and cafés, Belmond Hotel Monasterio is one of our favourite places to stay in the city. For travellers searching for the best luxury hotel in Cusco, this exceptional property delivers an experience that is as immersive as it is elegant.

Housed within a former monastery, Belmond Hotel Monasterio Cusco reflects the city's rich and layered history. Once the site of the Inca Temple of Amarucata and the Palace Chachauwasi, ‘The House of Knowledge,’ the building was later transformed into a Spanish monastery during colonial rule. The hotel retains much of its colonial architecture, with original stonework, arcaded walkways, colonial-era artworks, and opulent gold embellishments. Part of the magic is that from the outside, the whitewashed stone walls of the hotel give little hint as to the history and splendid interiors within.

A tranquil courtyard, home to a 300-year-old Andean cedar tree, serves as the hotel’s focal point, hosting local artists and musicians throughout the week. The adjacent San Antonio de Abad Chapel, with its gold-leaf interiors, remains one of Cusco’s most sought-after venues for weddings and private gatherings.
