Get out of the city and explore the South Coast. The black sand beaches and stunning coastline are unlike anywhere else in the world. Also, prepare to get active and take to the hills to experience waterfalls, geysers and amazing terrain.
Upon arrival you’ll be met by your guide and escorted to your accommodation.
The rest of the day will be spent at your leisure. Time permitting, your Lightfoot Travel Designer can advise on activities prior to departure.
Enjoy a drive in your rental car to Thingvellir National Park, the site of the original Althing, and the only place in the world where you can see tectonic plates drift apart above sea level.
Walk (or drive) along the canyon to Öxaráfoss waterfall and into the valley to Þingvallakirkja Church.
Next, continue to Silfra for a spot of snorkelling with a guide.
Afterwards, head to Geyser to witness one of the most active geysers in the area, Strokkur, spouting up to 90–120 ft into the air. At nearby Gullfoss waterfall you’ll find white water thundering down a 32-metre drop into an impressive canyon.
Today you’ll drive towards the South Coast, an area with majestic mountains, volcanic scenery, waterfalls and beaches.
Mid-morning, you’ll swap your vehicle for a horse. Journey highlights will include Holtsós lagoon, Seljalandsfoss waterfall, the black beaches of the coast (including Reynisfjara with its unique basalt columns), and Mýrdalsjökull glacier.
Today you’ll drive to Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and Diamond Beach, stopping by the canyon of Fjaðrárgljúfur en route.
In the afternoon you’ll join a boat tour, sailing among huge icebergs, looking for seals and learning about geology with your guide.
Drive to Skaftafell National Park where you’ll find hiking trails, the waterfalls of Svartifoss and Hundafoss, and Skaftafell glacier. This is also a great place to try ice climbing or glacier hiking.
This morning you’ll drive to Þórsmörk, a nature reserve in the heart of South Iceland nestled among the glaciers Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull and Tindfjallajökull.
Here, you’ll embark on a jeep drive and a hike up to Gígjökull glacier.
Afterwards you’ll drive to your next hotel.
Start your day with a boat tour of the three islands just off Reykjavík (Akurey, Engey or Lundey), where each year thousands of puffins breed. You’ll also see eider ducks, arctic terns, guillemots and cormorants.
Then head on a whale watching tour around Faxaflói bay, looking for Minke whales, white-beaked dolphins, porpoises, Humpbacks or Orcas.
Drive to Blue Lagoon, a natural geothermal spa surrounded by lava fields and black sandy beaches. We highly recommend enjoying a tailored spa treatment while here.
The afternoon will be spent at your leisure. This is your chance to visit Reykjavik's iconic Hallgrimskirkja church, The National Museum, the Old Harbour and Old Town and to check out the restaurants, galleries and shops.
