Where to Go When?

Komodo | May - October

Located east of Bali and Lombok, Komodo National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site, home to the legendary endemic Komodo dragon and one of Indonesia's most sought-after sailing areas. Private charters in this region can include Bali, Lombok, Sumbawa, Flores, Sumba and Alor. With more than 1,000 types of fish and 260 types of coral, Komodo's tropical waters are one of the most species-rich environments on earth. Around 60% of its famously exciting dive sites are also suitable for snorkelling with shallow, fringing reefs. Surfers can explore the surrounding islands of Lombok, Sumbawa, Sumba, and Rote to find perfect waves on a longer itinerary.

How to Get There: Komodo Airport (LBJ) in Labuan Bajo via Bali or Jakarta

Raja Ampat | November – April

Situated off the coast of West Papua, Raja Ampat is a chain of 1,500 paradisiac jungle-clad islands with steep limestone cliffs and white sand beaches. It is known as one of the most biologically diverse marine habitats on earth, with a great variety of coral and fish. Above water, the island's cultural heritage is diverse, with prehistoric cave paintings and relics from bygone eras, while recent history is visible in cave bunkers and seabed wreckage from World War II. Intrepid visitors can trek through the jungle, learn about kampong life in local villages, visit sea turtle rookeries and pearl farms, snorkel and dive with manta rays, and explore the coastal mangroves by sea kayak.

How to Get There: Sorong Airport (SOQ) in Sorong via Bali or Jakarta

The Spice Islands | October – November & March – April

This volcanic chain may be small, but it holds great historical significance in Indonesia. Also known as the Banda Islands or Maluku, these islands were the original source of nutmeg and mace during Dutch, English and Portuguese colonisation in the 17th century. Cruises in this region can include Raja Ampat and Halmahera. With a mixture of history and natural beauty, abandoned forts, nutmeg groves and local markets, this region has plenty to see on land.
