Spy polar bears, gorillas and bald eagles without leaving your sofa
For wintery scenes that will make you feel all warm inside, watch the bear cam at Wapusk National Park in Canada. Here you can see polar bear cubs tumbling in the snow or shadowing their mothers as they learn the skills needed to survive in the Arctic. If you want to really feel as if you’re there, you can take a ride in the Tundra Buggy that takes you on a journey across the wilderness. If the vehicle comes to an abrupt halt, it’s just a polar bear who has decided to do a vehicle inspection.
If you want a front row seat to the action, you can’t do any better than watching the Hippo Pool animal cam in Laikipia County, near Lightfoot favourite Ol Lentille. These lumbering beasts love nothing more than taking a dip in the pool then sunning themselves on the shoreline. Elephants, hippos, wildebeest and zebra are all known to quench their thirst at this African oasis.
A trip to the US isn’t complete without seeing a bald eagle – even a virtual one. Check out the bird cam that sits high above the town of Two Harbors. If you log on now, you can get a bird’s eye view of the nest and see the newborn chick inside. You can see the chick’s parents return with fish that they have caught along the Californian shoreline.
Take a virtual trek deep into the African jungle to see orphaned gorillas enjoying their leafy home at the Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Education Sanctuary. Set within an African wildlife corridor, you can see these social creatures grooming, foraging and relaxing within the undergrowth. Not only are you treated to amazing close-ups, but you can also view up to eight gorillas at one time.
Take the plunge and go on a virtual dive with sea lions in The Galapagos. Seals will playfully swim around you, shoals of fish will lazily cruise past you and marine iguanas will forage for food. You will be in no hurry to finish your Galapagos tour (not even when a shark swims past). You’ll feel as relaxed as if you were there in real life.
