Why ski one mountain when you can ski two? This picturesque resort features Blackcomb and Whistler mountain making it one of the largest ski areas in the world. The season is long – it runs from November until May, and the average snowfall in 12 metres. While the skiing won’t disappoint, the apres ski won’t either. A village of boutiques and restaurants can be found at the bottom of the slopes or you can book into the Four Seasons Whistler and get panoramic views of the mountains from its whirlpool.
In 1883, three railway workers discovered a natural hot spring in the Canadian Rocky Mountains and it became the location for Canada’s first national park. While you can no longer take a dip in the historic hot springs, you can join a ranger-led tour to find out more about the famed park, then make a splash in the Banff Upper Hot Springs and soak your muscles in those mineral-rich waters.
The Clayoquot Sound may be a playground for orcas, but it’s also where you can spy humpback whales, gray whales as well as harbour seals, sealions, sea otters and porpoises. And if you can tear your eyes away from the water, you can also see blue herons and bald eagles circling overhead.
Spend the day on Victoria. Catch the ferry from Vancouver to Victoria Harbour then get your culture fix by enjoying afternoon tea at the Chateauesque Fairmont Empress, taking a stroll through Canada’s oldest Chinatown and stopping and smelling the roses at the world-famous Butchart Gardens, which is now a National Historic Site of Canada.
If you want to see more than just the city, book a self-drive to the Rockies. Drive from the ski resort of Whistler, to Lillooet – the jade capital of Canada, before you visit Jasper National Park (the largest in the Rockies) and then Banff.
