Set on a private peninsula on the banks of Lake Tarawera in New Zealand, Solitaire Lodge is an oasis of tranquillity surrounded by native bush. Just 20 minutes’ drive from Rotorua yet free from its sulphuric smell and tourists, it’s the ideal base to explore this iconic New Zealand destination.
There are nine newly refurnished suites within the lodge, each with floor-to-ceiling windows leading to a private balcony or sundeck, and with views over Lake Tarawera and the Tarawera Volcano. Rooms have king-size or twin beds, a comfortable lounge, and en suites with underfloor heating and freestanding tubs.
The lodge is full board, serving hearty breakfasts, light lunches, and multi-course evening meals complemented by fine New Zealand wines. Guests can eat in the dining room or opt for a private meal in their suite.
There’s an array of activities on offer at Solitaire Lodge from hiking, biking, boating, and fishing, to experiencing Maori cultural displays, helicopter rides over the lake, and summiting Mount Tarawera.

Solitaire Lodge boasts an unrivaled setting on the shores of Lake Tarawera, 20 minutes from the thermal town of Rotorua in New Zealand’s North Island, and a three-hour drive from Auckland Airport.

Activities
A wealth of activities is offered at the Solitaire Lodge. Go kayaking or trout fishing; enjoy a lake walk; swim in the crystal clear waters in the summer; explore secluded bays, hot water beaches, and thermal hot springs; or learn about the Maori culture. Exciting experiences such as helicopter rides can also be arranged.
Children
Families are welcome at Solitaire Lodge although there are no specific facilities for children other than babysitting, which is available on request.
