Perched on the banks of Borneo’s Kinabatangan River and surrounded by tropical rainforest, the Sukau Rainforest Lodge offers comfort and luxury while maintaining its strict sustainability credentials. There are 20 rooms and 20 villas set on stilts, each with air-conditioning and en suites with solar-powered hot showers. The larger villas have private balconies overlooking the forest or river.
Choose from an abundance of activities, including tracking orangutans and Borneo pygmy elephants, birdwatching tours, river and 4WD safari tours, jungle and waterfall treks, and canopy walks.
You don’t need to leave the resort to witness the stunning wildlife either. Watch monkeys swinging through the trees while eating on the deck of Melapi restaurant, see tropical birds flitting through the canopy from the swimming pool, and listen to the rainforest night symphony while sipping a cocktail in the bar.

Location & Getting There
The lodge is located in Sabah, Borneo in Malaysia. It can be accessed via a 45-minute flight from Kota Kinabalu or 2 hour 45-minute flight from Kuala Lumpur into Sandakan Airport. From here there is a 15-minute transfer to Sandakan Yacht Club followed by 2.5-hour boat ride. Or you can go by road, which takes 2 hours to Sukau followed by a 5-minute boat ride to the lodge.
Accommodation
The lodge comprises 20 25-sqm rooms with twin- or queen-size beds, a sunroom and tea lounge overlooking the lush gardens, en-suite bathroom and air-conditioning units.
Activities
There are plenty of unique activities on offer including early morning and afternoon river cruises, night safaris, jungle walks, nature lectures, batik painting, learning how to play traditional games and relaxing foot spa treatments. You can also take a boat ride to nearby villages to learn about rural life.
Children
Children are welcome at the lodge but facilities for them are limited. Given its remote location and tranquil atmosphere, it is recommended for older children.
The green credentials of this lodge are impressive. It goes to great lengths to maintain harmony with the rainforest, even reducing light and sound so as not to bother the wildlife. The rooms and villas come with en suites with solar-powered hot showers. Guests can stroll right from the room into the jungle on an elevated boardwalk, stopping to see wildlife and tropical plants at every turn.
