Greystoke Mahale

Lake Tanganyika & Western Tanzania

Located in the remote Mahale Mountains National Park, Greystoke Mahale is a camp on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. Operated by Nomad Tanzania, this secluded property offers a retreat for adventurous souls, in a mesmerising location surrounded by forest and overlooking lakeside beach.

Six open-fronted bandas are set on the forest edge, constructed from reclaimed dhow wood with heavy canvas curtains. Each has a four-poster bed draped in mosquito netting, dressing room, outdoor deck, and en suite with flush toilet and shower accessed via a short boardwalk. There’s also an upstairs viewing area with daybed.

The communal mess has a library, lounge, bar and restaurant serving home-cooked meals. Private candlelit dinners on the beach can also be arranged.

The main activity is chimpanzee trekking in the mountains, where guests can spend an hour in the company of these incredible creatures. Other adventures include dhow cruises on the lake, hiking, birdwatching, snorkelling and fishing.
