Virunga Lodge feels as if it’s located on top of the world, on landscaped grounds in the rugged wild of Rwanda, enveloped in mist. Perched high on a ridge in Volcanoes National Park, it offers stunning views of the area’s five majestic volcanoes and of Burera and Ruhonda twin lakes.
The Lodge is built in traditional bush-chic style from wood and stone. Each of the ten bandas (cottages) have a terrace with gorgeous views, and everything has been built with a sensitivity to the environment, ensuring the structures are both low impact and fit seamlessly into the rustic environs.
Relax around the outdoor fire and swap stories of the day. Track gorillas and golden monkeys through the jungle. Visit the grave of renowned conservationist, Dian Fossey. Hike to the top of volcanoes. Visit a local school. A stay at Virunga Lodge is an opportunity to connect with yourself, with fellow travellers, and with the power of nature.
Virunga Lodge Information
Location & Getting There
Virunga Lodge is located on a peak between Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo in Volcanoes National Park. Kigali International Airport is 2 hours by car.
Accommodation
Virunga Lodge is built in traditional “bush-chic” style. The main lodge, forged of wood and stone, is home to the bar, dining room, and wide wraparound veranda, offering commanding views of the volcanoes and neighbouring lakes.
Ten guest bandas (cottages) are outfitted with tiled roofs, ensuite bathrooms, hand-carved windows, and king-size or twin beds. Hardwood floors are warmed by colourful woven rugs under traditional woven furniture. Two of the bandas are specially designed deluxe spaces that include expansive lounge areas, warmed by fireplaces for relaxation and private dining. All bandas are electricity-free, creating calm sanctuaries where you have permission to relax and recharge your mind instead of your phone.
Activities
Gorilla’s are the main attraction in the park, with daily treks to track these majestic creatures. There are also plenty of opportunities to climb volcanoes, hike to the waterfalls, track golden monkeys, or set out for a gentle stroll around the picturesque villages on the lake’s edge. In the afternoons enjoy a massage before dinner and the evening’s entertainment - a spectacular Intore dance performance at the lodge.
Children
Children are welcome at Virunga Lodge.
Virunga Lodge is a lovely eco-friendly lodge, built close to the Volcanoes National Park. Rooms are thoughtfully decorated, with flush toilets and hot showers in the en suite bathrooms. After a day on safari, returning to the cosy lounge area is a welcome retreat with a circular open fire, lots of comfy chairs and plenty of books and board games.
