Leopard Trails Wilpattu

Sri Lankan Safaris

Leopard Trails Wilpattu camp provides an authentic tented camp experience bordering Sri Lanka's largest and oldest national park, Wilpattu, northwest of the country. The park was closed to visitors during Sri Lanka's long civil war, which ended in 2009. As a result, it remains a hidden gem that is not widely known and is thus less crowded than the famous Yala National Park.

Wilpattu, also known as the land of the lakes, is famous for its thick forest that suddenly opens out into stunningly beautiful naturally occurring lakes or ‘Villus’, which attract a variety of game. There’s a huge variety of wildlife to be seen here, including, most famously, Sri Lanka’s largest population of leopards. The park is also famous for ancient archaeological ruins, which the guides will share anecdotes and stories about during game drives and unique excursions.

The professionally trained game rangers at Leopard Trails are the show's stars. All of them follow the Leopard Trails internal ranger training program, developed over 10 years ago and is based on African ranger training courses. It is the only comprehensive and professional training course in Sri Lanka.

Accommodation consists of 2 luxury tented suites and 4 smaller classic tents, all air-conditioned and private verandas.

The camp is family-friendly and welcomes children of all ages. Additional beds and cots can be arranged.

Sustainability

Leopard Trails Wilpattu prioritizes sustainability with solar power, waste management, ethical wildlife viewing, and community support, all aimed at preserving the natural habitat.

Dining

Dining at Leopard Trails Wilpattu features freshly prepared, locally sourced meals served in a natural setting. Guests enjoy gourmet dishes inspired by Sri Lankan cuisine, with options for dining under the stars or in the comfort of the camp’s communal areas. Special dietary needs are accommodated with advance notice.

How to Get There

Wilpattu National Park is about a 4.5-hour drive from Colombo International Airport.

Why we recommend Leopard Trails Wilpattu

Leopard Trails Wilpattu is a hidden gem in Sri Lanka. Located adjacent to Sri Lanka’s oldest and largest national park, the camp is in a stunning, secluded location with far fewer crowds than the southern national parks. We encourage Lightfoot guests to do a full-day safari in Wilpattu to reach the further ends of this large park, with a hot breakfast and lunch served during the day.
