The Kalahari Desert

The Kalahari Desert is a vast expanse of arid lands covering most of Bostwana and dipping into Namibia. It’s home to some of the most pristine landscapes in Africa and the breathtaking Central Kalahari Game Reserve.

The Kalahari is unusual for a desert as it has large areas of lush, fertile terrain, as well as expansive sand basins. From cheetahs to grazing springbok to black-maned lion pride, the wealth of life here is staggering. And the Central Kalahari Game Reserve is simply immense; it’s the largest private game reserve in southern Africa and the second largest wildlife reserve in the world.

Only a small number of travelers visit here each year, and our safari specialists recommend to our clients who want to experience a wild and remote part of Africa. You can visit the reserve all year round, but the kind of experience you have can vary. We generally recommend February to April when the summer rains begin to dissipate and the reserve’s verdant northern territories teem with grazing herbivores and their stalking predators.
