Our favourite experiences in Belize
Belize has some of the most breathtaking scenery in Central America, enjoying a sundrenched Caribbean coastline, lush rainforests and the dramatic peaks of the Maya Mountain range.
The country invites exploration, from the bustle of its historical capital Belize City to the evocative remnants of its Mayan legacy, while it remains at the forefront of ecotourism.
Much of Belize’s verdant sub-tropical forests cover the western Cayo Region, an area of the country with thriving wildlife, flora and fauna. Cayo – in western Belize – is home to Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary, a renowned sanctuary for baboons. There’s plenty of adventure to be enjoyed on a luxury tour of Cayo, from battling waterfalls in a canoe or hiking expeditions in the valleys of the Maya Mountains. Private jungle lodge, you can spot parrots high up in the tree canopy.
At Caracol, a vast ruined city deep within Chiquibul Forest Reserve, Cayo has some of Belize’s most impressive Mayan archaeological. Explore ancient temples, excavated tombs and plunging natural caves, as well as traditional villages where Mayan culture is still preserved.
Off Belize’s western coast lies the largest barrier reef in the northern hemisphere. The reef shelters the cluster of tiny islands known as the Cayes. The islands enjoy a laid-back Caribbean vibe and a quiet, secluded feel. The beaches have picture-perfect golden sands and shallow, transparent waters bursting with vibrant coral reefs.
The Cayes are a renowned for world-class diving and home to with spectacular marine wonders like the nearby Great Blue Hole, a unique sink in the heart of the Lighthouse Reef atoll. It forms part of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, a Unesco-protected ecosystem.
