Perched high above the rushing water of the Ayung River in a peaceful area on the outskirts of Ubud, lies Amandari – a mystical sanctuary that is laced with rich culture. Every six months for hundreds of years, villagers have taken the path through the resort grounds down to the pool of holy water.
Thirty free-standing luxury thatched suites, some with private plunge pools, are located on either side of the lobby, separated by walkways, traditional Balinese-style gateways, and private gardens. Local teak and coconut wood, as well as Javanese marble and volcanic stone, is used throughout the suites, creating cool contemporary spaces with all the warmth of a true Balinese home.
There’s an open-air restaurant, overlooking the 32-meter swimming pool, lying close to the gorge and the Ayung Valley beyond, serving delicious Indonesian cuisine. There is also a bar which enjoys similar views and setting. Meanwhile, treatments at the hotel’s spa utilize local ingredients, such as the black rice exfoliant and volcanic clay.

Amandari is all about Zen. Rooms come furnished in honey-colored wood, beige wicker chairs, cream tiled floors, complemented by views of the surrounding lush jungle. Our top pick is the duplex Ayung Suite which looks out over the verdant Ayung River Valley.
