On a private game reserve in the Waterberg region of South Africa’s north-westerly Limpopo province, Ant’s Hill is three hours’ drive north of Johannesburg. With a dramatic setting on the edge of an escarpment, the main lodge’s rooms, veranda and deck overlook a gorge and a waterhole popular with game.
Guest accommodation is provided in four cottages and a double room above the main lodge. Four-poster beds, sunken baths and waterfall showers provide comforts after a day among the creatures. Ant’s Hill aims to blend into the bush, with a thatch roof and huge doors folding all the way open. Outside, a dramatic natural infinity pool is set into boulders on the cliff-edge, cascading over the lip of the gorge.
Horse riding is a big feature of a stay at Ant’s Hill, with a team of horse managers and guides ready to get even the most inexperienced guest into the saddle. Whether you choose horseback or prefer a guided walk or game drive, the Waterberg area’s outstanding range of flora and fauna is reliably rewarding.
Ant’s prides itself on its family friendliness, with a unique policy of allowing children of all ages to join the adults on game-viewing activities, whether on foot or horseback. In addition to two two-bedroom cottages, Ant’s Hill also provides a trampoline, sand pit, and a good range of toys and books.
