Eastern Cape, South Africa

The Eastern Cape is one of the lesser-explored provinces of South Africa and is a brilliant option for families as it is malaria-free. There are some beautiful lodges and camps here which excel in both conservation efforts and educational safari experiences. Located north of Port Elizabeth, at the end of the Garden Route, this scenically diverse and fascinating province has much to offer visitors. Along the coastline the warm waters of the Indian Ocean laps onto a wide range of different beaches on South Africa's Eastern Cape. There are family friendly sands around Kenton-on-Sea whereas the Wild Coast is more dramatic with rougher shores.

From the sandy beaches and rugged coastline through to the wide open plains and mountains of the inland Karoo, there is excellent Big 5 game viewing opportunities on the private game reserves that make up this region. Alongside the Big 5, the Eastern Cape is home to other unique species such as aardvark, brown hyena, cheetah and wonderful bird life.

The size of the reserves in the Eastern Cape can be vast. Kwandwe has 74,000 acres with two lodges and three private houses spread across the reserve offering a variety of memorable safari experiences. It's one of our top choices for families and a particular highlight is the Rhino Conservation safari at Kwandwe Ecca Lodge. It's a fascinating insight into how the Kwandwe ecological team monitor and protect the reserve's black and white rhino population.
